Creating new content for your business website can be challenging, especially if you are struggling to write relevant content or follow a digital marketing strategy.
Well, what if there was a free tool that could not only help you identify what topics are currently trending, but also allows you to compare and analyse keywords and topics related to your business industry?
In this article, our Knutsford web agency will provide a full introduction to Google Trends and how this free online keyword tool can help improve your business website,
What is Google Trends?
Google Trends is a free search analysis website developed by Google. Created in 2006, Google Trends allows users to analyse and compare the popularity of search terms, keywords and trends across various regions, languages and time duration.
After merging Google Trends with Google Insights for Search, the website fundamentally uses graphs to visualise data so users can easily compare search trends.
How to use Google Trends for your business
After confirming Google Trends was originally designed for journalists, it has since become an invaluable tool for digital marketing purposes, particularly for businesses who want to know information about products, event and keywords that relate to their audiences.
Simply navigate to Google Trends and you’ll see the dashboard. From here you can either navigate around the trending stories or enter topics into the search box:
Once you land on Google Trends, you will quickly see from the dashboard, you can easily navigate around to see trending stories, Google Trend examples of how they analysis data along with a search box to enter a search term of topic…
Search and Compare Keywords
Simply type in a product, service or keyword related to your business website. Next, you will be given an insight into how your chosen search term performs across a range of filters including location, duration and category industry
You can also add up 5 more search terms and Google Trends will produce the same in-depth data for all 6 search terms so you can compare and evaluate what search term best suits your business.
For example, if you sell 6 different products – you could use the compare feature to see which of your 6 products is most relevant and trending in search so you can target content based around that particular product.
Identify Seasonal/Niche Keywords
Some seasonal trends are obvious. For example, searches for wrapping paper will spike during the Festive holidays in several counties so will see a rise in November and December.
However, most businesses will have more niche topics to discover. You just need to identify when interest will spike for specific search terms. In my example below, you can see I have chosen the keyword for ‘fitness’ for a 6-month duration. As you can see, there is a steady spike during the winter months where users will show an interest in healthy eating as part of new years revolution. This means it would be sensible for me to target content based around fitness during the winter months.
Discover Related Topics and Search Queries
So far, we have focused on identify and finding keywords. Now, let’s take a look at how to discover related topics and search queries. As a Knutsford Web Agency who specialise in building websites on WordPress, we want to see how relevant this search term has been over the last 12 months.
Now, we already know about how to identify and compare keyword patterns, but if you scroll down, you will see related topics and related questions. The Related topics section tells you what else your search audience is looking for, not including our keyword. As you can see, the highest related topic was ‘Gutenberg’. If you click through, the resulting data will verify exactly when and why users were searching for this related topic.
As you can see, the biggest spike occurred last August… exactly the same time when WordPress introduced it’s new block building element which was titled… you guess it… Gutenberg!
